Illustration of Widow Skimmer (Libellula luctuosa)

The Widow Skimmer is one of the most easily identified dragonflies in North America, with broad white patches flanked by black bands across all four wings in males. Females have similar banding but lack the white patches. Males are highly territorial, patrolling and perching prominently near ponds and slow water. The species name 'luctuosa' means mournful, inspired by the dark wing markings.
