The Pine Engraver Beetle is a small bark beetle that engraves characteristic Y or H-shaped galleries in the phloem of pine trees. Males bore into stressed trees and emit aggregation pheromones attracting females; mass attacks can overwhelm and kill even large trees. During outbreak years triggered by drought or wind damage, they are among the most ecologically significant disturbance agents in pine forests.
