Longman's Beaked Whale was known only from two skulls for nearly 80 years before living sightings and strandings confirmed it as a real species in the early 2000s. It is a large, little-known beaked whale of tropical Indo-Pacific and Atlantic waters, occasionally sighted well offshore of Hawaii and Mexico. It forms large aggregations unusual for beaked whales.
