Nelson's Spiny Pocket Mouse is known from very few specimens collected in the cloud forests of Chiapas, Mexico, and adjacent Guatemala. It is one of the rarest and least-known rodents in North America, with its exact population size and ecology essentially unstudied. Named for Edward W. Nelson, who collected extensively in Mexico in the late 19th century.
