Illustration of Newfoundland Lynx (Lynx canadensis subsolanus)

The Newfoundland Lynx is a large, island-dwelling subspecies of the Canada Lynx that has been isolated on Newfoundland since the last ice age. It is larger on average than mainland lynx and has adapted to the somewhat different prey base of the island, including snowshoe hares and ruffed grouse. The population is considered distinct enough that some researchers argue for separate subspecies status.
