New Jersey Tea is a low native shrub of dry, open woods and prairies, producing masses of tiny white flowers that attract numerous insect visitors. Its leaves were used as a tea substitute during the American Revolution. The plant fixes nitrogen and has deep roots that allow it to survive and resprout after fire.
