The Ferruginous Hawk is the largest buteo in North America and a bird of open western prairies and shrubsteppe. In the light morph, its rusty-orange back and legs form a V-shape against the white belly visible from below in flight. It frequently nests on the ground on hillocks or badlands formations when trees are absent.
