The Arctic Fritillary is a small, circumpolar fritillary of the arctic and alpine tundra, with orange-tawny wings and distinctive white-spotted hindwing underside. It is one of the toughest butterflies in North America, active even in cold, overcast arctic conditions. It flies in a single brief midsummer brood on the tundra where violets bloom.

Larvae: violet leaves. Adults: nectar from tundra wildflowers
