Illustration of Redhead (Aythya americana)

The Redhead is a diving duck with a round, chestnut-red head and gray body in males, named for its distinctive coloration. It is one of the most parasitic ducks, frequently laying eggs in the nests of other ducks — especially Canvasbacks — rather than incubating its own. Large concentrations winter in the Laguna Madre of Texas, where several hundred thousand birds may gather.
