Wild Sarsaparilla is a low-growing woodland perennial with a single large compound leaf held on a long stalk. It produces small clusters of white flowers near the ground followed by dark purple berries. The aromatic root was historically used as a substitute for sarsaparilla flavoring. Many birds and small mammals eat the berries.
