Yellowroot is a native shrub of stream banks and moist forest ravines in the Appalachians and southern Appalachians, with pinnately compound leaves and small, dark purple-brown flower clusters in spring. The roots and inner wood are bright yellow with berberine alkaloids, used medicinally by indigenous peoples. It forms dense colonies along mountain streams.
