Highbush Cranberry (not a true cranberry) is a native shrub of moist forests and wetland edges whose translucent red berries persist on bare branches through winter. The berries are very tart but edible when cooked. They are a critical winter food for bohemian and cedar waxwings, sometimes sustaining large flocks through deep cold spells.
