Eastern Hemlock is a graceful, long-lived evergreen tree that creates distinctive cool, shaded microhabitats in ravines and stream corridors of the Appalachians and New England. Populations are suffering severe decline from the introduced woolly adelgid insect. Its dense canopy moderates stream temperature, and it provides critical winter habitat for many birds.
