Illustration of Colorado Chipmunk (Neotamias quadrivittatus)

The Colorado Chipmunk is a brightly colored, boldly striped chipmunk of the southern Rocky Mountain plateau, replacing the yellow-pine chipmunk in the pinon-juniper and ponderosa pine zones of Colorado and adjacent states. Its black and white head stripes are particularly crisp and clear. Colorado chipmunks cache seeds intensively in autumn and depend on these stores during their winter period of reduced activity.
