The Cabbage Palm is Florida's state tree and one of the most cold-hardy palms in North America, surviving light freezes. Its common name comes from the edible 'heart of palm' or 'cabbage' once harvested from the growing tip, though harvesting kills the tree. It is remarkably salt-tolerant and thrives along coastal strands and hammocks. Mature trees can reach 65 feet tall with a distinctive fibrous, boot-covered trunk.

Habitat
Coastal strands, maritime hammocks, flatwoods, and riparian corridors of the southeastern US.
Diet
Fruits provide food for over 30 bird species including robins, mockingbirds, and warblers; flowers are visited by bees and other insects.
