American Black Currant is a native shrub of moist, rich forests and stream banks in the northern United States and Canada. Its shiny black berries ripen in July and August and are eagerly consumed by many songbirds and small mammals. The flowers are an important source of nectar for native bees and hummingbirds in spring.
