Illustration of Volcano Mouse (Neotomodon alstoni)

The Volcano Mouse is a large-bodied, vole-like rodent of high alpine grasslands in central Mexico, found near the same volcanic peaks as the volcano rabbit. It has a dense, soft pelage suited to alpine cold and large hind feet for moving through bunch-grass habitat. Its closest relatives are the North American deer mice, from which it diverged to fill a vole-like ecological role.
