Illustration of Volcano Rabbit (Romerolagus diazi)

The Volcano Rabbit is the world's second-smallest rabbit and is found only on the slopes of four volcanoes near Mexico City. It is the most ancient rabbit lineage in North America, having changed little in 5 million years, and communicates through high-pitched sounds rather than tail flashing. Fewer than 7,000 individuals remain due to habitat loss from urban expansion around Mexico City.
