The Common Click Beetle is a medium-sized, brown-gray click beetle that flips itself into the air with a loud click using a spine-and-notch mechanism on its thorax — a startling antipredator behavior that also rights the beetle when overturned. Its larvae, the wireworms, live in soil for several years feeding on roots and are a significant pest of crops. Adults are commonly found under bark.
