Illustration of Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica)

The Bluethroat breeds regularly in shrub tundra in western Alaska — it is the only US breeding representative of the Old World flycatcher group Muscicapidae. The male's brilliant blue throat with a chestnut or white central spot is distinctive. It often shows only the rufous tail base when it runs through low vegetation.
