The American Snout is unmistakable due to its dramatically elongated mouthparts (palpi) that resemble a snout and help it mimic a dead leaf or twig when at rest. It periodically undergoes spectacular mass migrations in Texas, with millions of individuals moving together in response to abundant hackberry growth following rains. Its wings are patchy orange-brown with white spots near the tip.
