Illustration of European Firefly (Lampyris noctiluca)

The European Firefly is unusual among fireflies in that the female is wingless and glows continuously from the grass to attract the flying, less luminescent male. It is occasionally recorded in North America in areas with European introductions. Unlike most North American fireflies, both adults have reduced flash displays.
