The Dark-eyed Junco is sometimes called the 'snowbird' because its arrival in southern states signals the onset of winter. It comprises several distinct-looking subspecies or groups — slate-colored, Oregon, pink-sided, white-winged, and gray-headed — once considered separate species. White outer tail feathers that flash in flight are a unifying field mark across all forms.
