The Double-crested Cormorant is the most widespread cormorant in North America, found on both coasts and inland waters. Unlike ducks, its feathers lack waterproofing oil, so it must spread its wings to dry after each dive — a distinctive, heraldic-looking posture. It is an efficient fish predator that can dive to 25 feet and has been controversial near aquaculture facilities.
