American Holly is the only native evergreen holly of the eastern United States, with spiny-margined leaves and bright red berries that persist through winter. It is a state tree of Delaware and one of the most important wildlife plants of the coastal plain. The berries are a critical winter food for cedar waxwings, mockingbirds, and hermit thrushes.
