Desmarest's Spiny Pocket Mouse inhabits tropical wet forests of Mexico and Central America, reaching the southern fringe of North America as treated by many references. It has mixed spiny and soft fur and external cheek pouches for transporting seeds. Unlike most pocket mice, it is associated with high-rainfall tropical forests rather than arid environments.
