The American Rubyspot is a beautiful damselfly where males bear brilliant red patches at the base of all four wings that flash brilliantly in sunlight. Females have smaller, less vivid basal wing spots. Males are highly territorial and engage in stunning aerial battles along stream margins. It inhabits running water and is one of the most recognizable North American damselflies.
