The North American Wolverine subspecies was recently listed as Threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, driven primarily by projected loss of persistent spring snow cover needed for denning. It requires enormous territories—females may range over 500 square miles—and cannot tolerate fragmented or developed landscapes. The wolverine's strength-to-size ratio is extraordinary among mustelids, allowing it to dominate carcasses against much larger predators.
