The Trumpeter Swan is the largest waterfowl species in North America and among the heaviest flying birds in the world, with some individuals exceeding 30 pounds. It was hunted nearly to extinction by the early 20th century; recovery programs have brought populations back to over 63,000 birds. Its resonant, horn-like call carries for miles across wetlands.
