Speckled Alder is a multi-stemmed shrub of streambanks and wetland edges that fixes nitrogen and is often one of the first woody plants to colonize wet disturbed areas. Its catkins provide some of the earliest pollen available each spring. American woodcock probe soft stream-bank soils for earthworms in alder thickets, and yellow warblers nest in the branches.
