Silver Maple is a fast-growing tree of eastern floodplains and riverbanks, named for the silvery underside of its deeply lobed leaves. It flowers very early in spring, often while snow is still on the ground, providing one of the first nectar sources for emerging bees. Wood ducks and many cavity-nesting birds nest in its hollow trunks.
