Gambel Oak is the dominant oak of the Rocky Mountain foothills and Colorado Plateau, often growing in large clonal thickets from underground root systems. It provides critical food and cover for mule deer, Steller's jays, and wild turkeys in the intermountain West. After fire, root systems resprout vigorously, and the dense thickets become important wildlife habitat.
