Bigcone Douglas-fir is a large, stout conifer endemic to the Transverse and Peninsular ranges of southern California, with the largest cones of any Douglas-fir at 4–7 inches. It is highly fire-adapted, with thick bark and the ability to resprout from the crown after severe fires. California spotted owls nest in its old-growth stands.
