Pin Cherry is a short-lived pioneer tree that rapidly colonizes forest disturbances and burned areas in the boreal and northern hardwood zones. Its small, bright red cherries ripen in July and August and are consumed by over 70 bird species including many warblers, thrushes, and orioles. It accelerates forest succession and enriches forest soils as it decomposes.
