Monterey Pine

Pinus radiata

RarePlant
Illustration of Monterey Pine (Pinus radiata)

Monterey Pine has one of the smallest natural ranges of any North American pine, occurring in just three native populations on the California coast near Monterey and in two Channel Islands populations. Despite its tiny native range, it is the world's most widely planted pine in commercial plantations across New Zealand, Australia, Chile, and Spain. The native stands are threatened by pitch canker disease and loss of the coastal fog they depend on. Paradoxically, this rare native tree shapes the economies of nations on the other side of the world.

Habitat
Coastal bluffs, slopes, and valleys in the narrow fog belt near Monterey, Cambria, and Ano Nuevo, California.
Diet
Seeds consumed by Steller's jays, scrub-jays, and small mammals; coastal habitat supports diverse wildlife.
