Deergrass is a large, clumping bunchgrass of dry washes, chaparral, and mountain meadows in California and the Southwest, forming impressive rounded mounds 3–4 feet in diameter. It produces tall, slender flower spikes that remain attractive through winter. It was the primary basket-weaving material for many California indigenous peoples.
