Illustration of Giant Vinegaroon (Mastigoproctus giganteus)

The Giant Vinegaroon is a large, scorpion-like arachnid with a whip-like flagellum tail that sprays a vinegar-scented acetic acid mixture from glands at the tail base when threatened — giving it its name. Despite its fierce appearance and the spray, it is not venomous and its bite is not dangerous. It is nocturnal, hiding under rocks and debris by day in the desert Southwest.
