The 13-Year Periodical Cicada is one of the southern species of periodical cicadas that emerges in massive synchronized broods every 13 years — one of nature's most spectacular phenomena. Its prime-numbered life cycle is thought to frustrate predator cycles. Adults live only a few weeks above ground to mate, producing a deafening combined chorus.
