The Familiar Bluet is one of the most abundant and widespread damselflies in North America, with a bright blue-and-black pattern and a tendency to form huge mating aggregations at ponds and lakes. Males are vivid blue with black postocular spots and black abdominal rings. Pairs are frequently seen in the 'wheel' mating position while flying over water.
