Illustration of Brown Creeper (Certhia americana)

The Brown Creeper is a master of camouflage, its streaky brown-and-buff plumage matching bark so perfectly that it is nearly invisible when pressed flat against a trunk. It always forages by spiraling up a tree, then flying to the base of the next tree to begin again. Its song is a high, thin series of whistled notes that is one of the hardest bird songs for older birders with high-frequency hearing loss to detect.
