Giant Red Indian Paintbrush is the most common and widespread Indian paintbrush in the West, found in mountain meadows, sagebrush, and open forests from Alaska to New Mexico. Like all paintbrushes, it is hemiparasitic on neighboring plants. Calliope and broad-tailed hummingbirds are important pollinators across its range.
