Pasqueflower is one of the first wildflowers to bloom on the prairie, pushing through cold soils in March and April before most plants have awakened. Its lavender blossoms are covered in silky hairs that protect the flower from frost. It is the state flower of South Dakota and a symbol of spring on the northern plains.
