Hazel Alder is a multi-stemmed shrub of stream banks and wetland margins in the southeastern United States, often growing in thickets in seasonally flooded soils. It is a nitrogen-fixer that stabilizes eroding streambanks and produces catkins in late winter that are one of the earliest pollen sources for native bees. American woodcock probe for earthworms beneath alder stands.
