What snake is this?
The overwhelming majority of snakes people photograph are harmless, and a large share of the ones reported as venomous are not. Two things drive the confusion: several harmless species flatten their heads into a triangle when frightened, and several have blotched patterns that read as "rattlesnake" at a glance. Working through pattern, then head, then location gets most sightings to a confident answer.
Identify a snake in three checks
1. Pattern type, before colour
Sort the pattern into one of four kinds: solid and unmarked, striped along the length, blotched or saddled across the back, or banded in rings that wrap the body. This matters more than colour, which fades and darkens with age and with how recently the snake shed. Stripes running lengthwise mean garter and ribbon snakes, a large and harmless group. Rings that wrap fully around the body are a much smaller set.
2. Head and eyes, with a large caveat
A blocky triangular head and vertical, cat-like pupils suggest a pit viper in North America, and a narrow head with round pupils suggests a harmless species. But this is genuinely unreliable in the field. Harmless water snakes and rat snakes flare their jaws to fake a triangular head when threatened, and you should never be close enough to a live snake to assess pupil shape. Use it as supporting evidence on a photo, never as the deciding factor in person.
3. Where you were, which does most of the work
Range narrows the field faster than any physical feature. Many species simply do not occur in large parts of the country, so a confident identification of something outside its range is almost always wrong. Note the habitat as well: in water, on a rock face, in leaf litter, or in a suburban garden. A live map of what has actually been recorded near you will usually cut the candidate list to a handful.
Harmless snakes mistaken for venomous ones
These four confusions account for a large share of misidentified snakes. In each pair the first is the one people fear and the second is what they usually actually saw, or the reverse.
Young rat snakes are grey with dark blotches and are reported as copperheads constantly. The tell is the shape of the markings: a copperhead’s crossbands are hourglasses, wide on the sides and pinched narrow across the spine. Rat snake blotches are widest along the back.
Both are ringed red, black, and yellow. On the coral snake the red and yellow rings touch; on the harmless Scarlet Kingsnake a black ring separates them. The rhyme about red touching yellow only holds in North America and is not a substitute for a range check.
Almost any snake in water gets called a cottonmouth. Garter snakes swim readily and have clean lengthwise stripes, which cottonmouths never have. Cottonmouths also swim high with the body visible, while most harmless water snakes swim with only the head above the surface.
Milk snakes have crisp, high-contrast saddles with dark borders and a slender body; rattlesnakes are heavy-bodied with dark chevrons and a thick, blunt tail. Milk snakes also vibrate their tails in dry leaves, which produces a convincing buzz and causes real alarm.
Before you rely on this
Do not use a photo identification to decide whether a snake is dangerous, and do not approach a snake to get a better photo. Harmless species imitate venomous ones deliberately, several venomous species are variable in appearance, and the features that separate them reliably are not ones you can assess safely at close range. If a snake is in a place it cannot stay, call your state wildlife agency or a local removal service. If someone has been bitten, contact emergency services or Poison Control immediately and do not wait on an identification.

Is a triangular head a reliable sign of a venomous snake?
No. It is a rough tendency, not a rule. Harmless water snakes, rat snakes, and hognose snakes all flatten and widen their heads when threatened, which is exactly when you are most likely to be looking at one.
What should I photograph to get a snake identified?
From a safe distance, get the whole body to show the pattern, and if you can, the top of the head and the tail. Note where you were, since range often decides the answer. Never move closer or handle a snake for a photo.
The snake rattled its tail. Is it a rattlesnake?
Not necessarily. Rat snakes, milk snakes, and several others vibrate their tails against dry leaves when alarmed, and it sounds remarkably like a rattle. Treat any snake you cannot identify as one to leave alone, and back away regardless.
